Ah, so that's where Lewis got the idea for "The Silver Chair", my favourite Narnia story.I am not familiar with that story, but "giants throw rocks at something" is pretty much _the_ archetypal giant narrative in German folklore (although they sometimes get replaced by the Devil).
And, well, if you don't know anything about ice ages, they make for a pretty good explanation.
