I don’t think the Messages team at apple lives in a normal reality. I can’t imagine what kind of scenario I’d be in where I would be texting with someone whom I didn’t already share a language with, and with whom I’d trust some AI translated garbage to speak properly to. -

Luckily my browser has a function where I can highlight text and get a translation, but I have to use Google's translator for my English to make any reply. This function would actually be quite useful to me.

@audreygwinter@dice.camp Just to contextualize, this feature is in iOS’s messages app, the SMS/RCS texting application. So you’d be using it with someone you’ve already exchanged phone numbers with.
I agree this would be useful for mastodon or the browser where you might have a more general audience, but it’s really curious in a place where you probably have a more intimate connection to the person you’re talking to.
