Doesn't matter if we're lucky if any given person has even heard of all three of D&D, CoC, and Vampire. Panache means nothing if we're invisible, and D&D only really god much positive visibility only *after* CRPGs made such an extreme impact on the direction of the video game industry that levels and skill trees have gone from being "RPG elements" to just *expected*.@Printdevil @Taskerland
Heck, want to know something distressing? In Final Fantasy XI (you know, the *first* FF MMO), I've run into people who assume that "TTRPG" just means "board game" and thus shut down when I try to talk about them... *never mind that the FF franchise is a near-direct descendant of D&D*. -

Honestly, I don't know that it was avoidable, outside of some miraculously different history that resulted in video games not massively outshining roleplaying in popular culture. I remember how in the 1990s, trying to get people to understand that I wasn't talking about video games was like pulling teeth, even when I *did* start specifically referring to "pen & paper RPGs". -
Whenever I think of the fact that the hobby now refers to itself as "ttrpgs", I am reminded of that line from Office Space: Why do we have to change our name? They're the ones who suck!

I'd argue that they don't know what the words "psychological horror" means but when has the video game industry shown any capacity for thought or understanding.
It takes them an 8-digit budget and a 300-strong team of coders and designers to recreate the faint shadow of a 14 year-old running Keep on the Borderlands but it's actual RPGs that have to change their name.
@Taskerland Eh, media literacy is not people's forte as an average. I mean, we have TTRPG writers who use words as "cinematic noir" in the same sentence.

I've said it before about Eberron, and I'll say it again: "Pulp-noir" isn't a contradiction in terms. It's a range. It *is* an entire world, after all.You can find pulpy things, you can find noir things, and you can have them crash together so suddenly you have a bombastic paladin and a cynical detective in the same party, acting out a Green Lantern & Green Arrow dynamic.

It was just to differentiate from computers and no one cared about the actuality of the real hobby, because we are smol beans.

One of the fundamental differences between RPGs as we understand them and computer games, is that you will find life size Cybernauts at proper RPGs, looming over the players.

@RogerBW It moved the hobby from being its own thing to being the junior partner in a cultural sector that includes boardgames and warhammer figurines.
We used to have our own specialist retailers, now we have a single dusty shelf at the back of a shop that wants to sell you a £50 miniature.
It's like renaming portraiture 'Face-based interior design details' and replacing galleries with a tiny corner at the back of a B&Q. Somewhere near the toilets.
