Traveller and Shadowrun are intellectually fascinating to me as I love the ideas behind both games but I didn't really like the original edition of either.

However, despite my not thinking much of the original iterations of either of these games, I am forced to admit that each subsequent edition has somehow made them worse.

It is very funny to me that the creator of Traveller wound up just giving the IP to Mongoose who immediately churned out a D&D compatible version as though the D20 crash had never happened.

Mongoose are like the characters in the Producers except they're IP trolls... They keep buying the rights to really interesting properties and turning them into awful, unedited, D&D-compatible shovelware.

"Springtime for Dungeons... and Draaa-aaa-gons! Winter, for the hobby at laaaaaaarge..."

@Taskerland Except in The Producers they didn't have competition from Mophidius turning out "Winter for Stalin" 2D20 IP musicals.

@Taskerland As far as rules are concerned, I think that Mongoose Traveller is the best Traveller rule set that isn't GURPS. It feels like someone's house rules on the original, tidied up.
I haven't had much to do with their background material. And of course Mongoose editing is legendary.

@Taskerland Marc couldn't bear to make it free, and Mongoose were the only greedheads available.

@BigJackBrass @Taskerland You have suggested in my hearing that if it isn't recognisably the Traveller rules it doesn't feel like Traveller to you…

@RogerBW I don't think they could have made a less hospitable-to-me version of Traveller had they deliberately set out to do so.

I think they gave the game's fanbase what they wanted but sweet Georgia Brown...
