    Fantasy RPGs impose an order on folklore beings that isn't in the source material. Labels that are original synonyms become the names of distinct creatures. Behaviour that was originally shared promiscuously among several vague categories of being becomes characteristic of just one.

      Yeah, it's a challenge. I mean, I love a TTRPG Monster Manual as much as the next guy, but they too often try to impose structure where there is none.

      A "toolkit" approach might be best.
