The entire premise of modern Democratic Party politics is that you can create a mathematically perfect platform that appeals to everyone, including the 30-35% of voters who are sociopaths. But every attempt has failed because of the contradictions inherent in including sociopaths in your base. The amorality of appealing to these people by throwing some other groups of people under the bus is repulsive to everyone who wants a better world, without whom your politics is self-serving and worthless.

On the other hand, a morally incoherent political platform is well designed to cancel out the people who want to make things better, which is exactly what you would want to maintain the status quo, especially if you're not that concerned about actually winning elections or what the other party is doing.
