As an aside, I picked up a couple of Dick Blick's in-house brand markers and they react VERY VERY strangely to attempts to blend colors.
The white highlights in the background of the Sapphire? Made by repeatedly tracing a line over with the lightest grey in the set I bought. It's, I don't know, *corrosive* or something. Very very odd.

Second trip to the art store this week. Gonna swap out a couple colors of gel pen (and the one pen with a GIGANTIC GODDAMN AIR BUBBLE in the ink, can't believe I didn't notice that) and also those cheap grey markers for something better quality.

Okay, pens and markers replaced with non-sucky ones. Even tested them out, everything's good now. Woo
