What’s with the name Lloyd and fantasy/isekai anime? No hate or anything. Just feels like an odd choice for a hero name. Seems to pop up more than I’d expect.

@yon@sakurajima.moe I have had the exact same thought.

Ciel is another one that pops up inexplicably often.

@NullNowhere It’s apparently French for heaven/sky, which I found out fairly recently. L'Arc-en-Ciel apparently means something like rainbow. Don’t know French so take it for what it is:)

So I wonder if it just sounds cool to the authors and that’s why we get it, or if some find it amusing. A recent anime named a demon Ciel for instance:)

@yon@sakurajima.moe honestly I think anything “Sky” is in vogue as names go. “Sora” is another name that appears everywhere and also means sky.

@NullNowhere That makes sense, and trends are trends. Be it baby or character names.

Always intrigued by their use of European/unpronounceable names. It’s worse than a cheap fantasy novel 🙂

@yon@sakurajima.moe I sorta wish they wouldn't bother. It often feels out of place or forced.

But Japanese fantasy is sorta a strange beast to begin with. Japanese fantasy seems like a giant hodgepodge of era influences, often times as much fairytale european as like, high middle ages, with a very Japanese expectation of high bureaucracy and tidiness.
