For those who look at the Bluesky drama and have the urge to tell those people to come over to the Fediverse...
a) Know that black people are not impressed by the Fedi. They have no reason to be. This place is very very very white leaning, and many of The Privliged like to discount/infantilize/supress/talk down to those marginilized voices.
(Personally, I look forward to seeing Blacksky thrive because those people have done The Work)b) With the amount of people who did choose the Fedi first (when they moved off of [othersocialnetwork]), its pretty safe to say that some of the toxic habits from those spaces were carried over here. Even the people who have been on the Fedi for a while can lack patience with people like this.
c) Someone who is considering moving here are already very very frustrated. Social media as a whole is frustrating with the respective admin teams pulling fuck-shit. Many of these people are suffering a form of social media migration fatigue and dont have the bandwidth for hefty explanations, nor people Fedi-Splaining shit to them.
d) Do not try and sell people on the Fedi with the idea that decentralization automatically solves all the problems. It doesnt. Its important to note that many of the problems on a social network are less about the tech and more about moderation and how people behave. Even if the fedi tech was perfect (and it isnt), the Fedi would still need to be a welcoming place. -
