Moving private Facebook groups to the fediverse?
-
I’ve talked with a lot of people who are part of Facebook groups that would like an alternative. What are the options in the fediverse today?
Ideas I’ve heard so far:
-
Forums like NodeBB and Discourse allow private categories (similar to groups) as well as the ability to federate public categories. The Nexus of Discussions uses NodeBB.
-
an “island network” of instances that federate with each other – see The Website League for an example
-
Misskey and forks like Sharkey have “channels”, which are similar to private groups
-
Friendica has some support for private groups – and a lot more functionality; see Elana Rossi’s Show and Tell for a detailed discussion.
-
Akkoma, GoToSocial, Misskey, and Mastodon fork like Glitch and Hometown offer local-only posts that don’t federate, so you can use an instance to somewhat approximate a group.
Does anybody have experience moving Facebook groups to any of these? Sr other suggestions?

I would say NodeBB, Friendica and Hubzilla as options

And dansup@mastodon.social notes that Pixelfed’s working on groups as well. I’m used to thinking of Pixelfed as an image-focused Instagram alternative, but it could be an option here as well.
Earlier I had asked about hosting options … here’s what I’ve found so far.
-
Elest.io has hosting for Friendica, Pixelfed, NodeBB and other options.
-
KnT hosting offers Hubzilla, GoToSocial, and Pixelfed
There are probably other options as well. I’ve got a little experience with a couple of these. discussions.thenexus.today is hosted by NodeBB, and it’s been quite solid (although there hasn’t yet been a lot of activity yet). I also tested out KnT’s $3.75/month GoToSocial instance; it was very easy to get up and going, and support was very helpful when I screwed something up, but again I there hasn’t been a lot of activity so I’m not sure about the performance or scalability.
