Someone just told me the Velvet Underground aren’t as impactful as the Beatles because neither he nor his friends have ever heard of them.

I hate to sound like a fucking hipster, but impact isn’t measured by whether you’ve personally heard of a band. The Beatles changed the world by being everywhere. The Velvet Underground changed the world by changing the people who mattered next.
And if you haven’t heard of the Velvet Underground, maybe you really just don’t know much about rock music.

Seriously, never heard of the Velvet Underground? Next they'll say they've never heard of James Brown, and at that point I know for a damn fact that their musical tastes are as deep as a wading pool.
But considering I once pulled the "Who's On Stage" skit on a group of coworkers, they're not alone...

@atomicpoet “The Velvet Underground didn’t sell many records, but everyone who bought one went out and started a band.”

Michael Gemar Brian Fucking Eno said that.
And he’s the best selling artist of all time just on account of composing the Windows 95 starting chime.

Jennifer Kayla | Theogrin 🦊 I know—I’m shocked!
I mean, I understand not hearing about the VU because you’re just not into music.
But saying they’re not important because you’ve never heard of them? That verges on solipsism.

Appropriately enough, this is like saying that because you've never heard of Andy Warhol, he must not have been as much of an inspiration as Pablo Picasso.

Jennifer Kayla | Theogrin 🦊 What if someone truly believed Thomas Kinkade was the most important painter of all time because he sold the most paintings?
Actually, someone probably does believe this.
