    Ghosts sometimes have rather elaborate conditions that must be fulfilled before they can find release.

    And they can get rather upset if someone botches this - even if they didn't get any instructions!

      @juergen_hubert The bit with the oak and the cradle for the person who's to lay the ghost is a poem in English as well. Alas, cannot cite - it's really short so hard to search.

        Variants of this are pretty widespread in German folk tales, and I suspect that they exist in other countries as well.
