I NEED my junior engineers to see initial problems and not immediately think “well this approach is utterly impossible, let’s do a workaround for 6 hours”. I need them to dig.
If they then get stuck I want them to ask me. These are teachable moments and I want to build them up!
I don’t entirely blame them. One of the tragedies of software development is that so many developers are standoffish assholes that junior developers instinctively spend half a day on wasted workarounds rather than interface with them for 20 minutes.
