Public violence is different from personal violence.

An uncomfortable aspect public violence is the importance of how the crimes are covered. Violent individuals are willing to kill, to maim, to often sacrifice their own life for the fantasy of what "the world" will make of their crime. "How will I be remembered?"

This is why you see copycats. They watch how other killers are treated in media and craft their violence to create bigger and "better" reactions.
