@dmdavid Maybe gamers like hex crawls more than WotC thinks.
My favorite parts of both those adventures, and my players' favorite parts, were the pick-your-pleasure quests that preceded Castle Ravenloft and the Tomb of the Nine Gods, not those locations themselves. The increase in player frustration and decrease in engagement in the Tomb of the Nine Gods, in particular, was palpable.
