Welp, TIL that people actually, legitimately bet on who will become the next pope.

Welp, TIL that people actually, legitimately bet on who will become the next pope. It's innocent I suppose (at least, as innocent as gambling in general can be), though not innocent enough for it to have not been illegal in the past even when gambling/betting (on other matters) was.

@irfan There's a whole gambling market on pretty much every election, economic outcome, war, and market decision. Kalshi runs one, Robinhood runs a "predictions market". Probably others.
It strikes me as mildly disgusting and irreverent. There's really nothing but perverse incentives here, and it encourages the creation of one of the most destructive kinds of people: The ones who view everything, all this reality, as just a game full of NPCs. The truth is that stuff has a lot of weight and is deadly serious to many. It should not be gamified.
That said, I know there are more destructive things out there. Just a sore spot to see such shamelessness, and I just hate it.
