I’m really intrigued by the fundamental ideas of Nix, but every blog post about nix has the frantic energy of someone caught in an MLM trap trying to convince you with white knuckles that despite all the horrible things they’re describing, it is all actually very good and normal stop worrying.
The 70lbs of hacks, the indefensibly bad functional language, the impenetrable documentation, the difficulty of doing even basic things, the slowness and pain of getting new packages and their updates upstreamed, the internal dysfunction of its development, are worth it and fine… are things said by crazy people. All of this stuff has been known for years and it feels like nothing has changed except more hacks.
I think the only reason Nix still exists is because starting from scratch and replicating all the recipes would be sunk cost.
