    You know, one advantage of #Brexit from the perspective of the #EuropeanUnion is that we have lost a huge foreign policy liability.

    I mean, none of the European colonizing nations (which by this point represent only a minority of EU member states, although a powerful one) have really done the work to come to terms with their Imperialist past and acknowledge their wrongs.

    But the #BritishEmpire was by far the biggest Evil Empire in world history, and the British _really_ haven't come to terms with that - Brexit and subsequent events showed that the #UnitedKingdom has an epic dose of nostalgia poisoning, and they are hellbent on destroying what little international goodwill they have.

    Really, the EU is better off without the UK as they are now - we have enough problems our own we need to tackle.

      @juergen_hubert it's true enough the UK hasn't addressed the legacies of colonialism

      France is still actively engaging in colonialism

        @juergen_hubert British Empire is nowhere near to be the biggest Evil Empire. British Empire did a lot of great things to humanity and pushed us forward. Before US, they were the main inventors and investors in science.

        They abolished international slave trade, outlawed it, created quite a lot of transportation systems, invested is Suez Canal, created in colonies legal frameworks that still work well even after the Empire, they got rid of quite a lot of bad things like suttee.

          @horoqano

          So you know of a bigger Evil Empire than the British one?

          I mean, they used to brag that "the sun never set" on their empire. That was pretty big!

            @juergen_hubert if I was from a country that did 4 genocides last century, and was supporting another one this minute
            I'd hold my whist about the Brits

                @zbrown

                French colonial fuckery is indeed a problem, though it is much more regionally concentrated than the British Empire was.
