It's extremely simple. I am surprised more home bakers do not do it. Granted, as mentioned it does require quite a bit of forethought and an initial investment of vanilla beans and alcohol (though there is no reason to go expensive on the booze. I went midgrade).
Just be careful about it. I can tell you one year I was extremely mad when a full jar of nearly done extract I had got knocked off into the sink and shattered
