Reminds me of when I ended up playing a changeling. Five players plus the DM; two players were transgender, and one was non-binary. We were going around the table introducing our characters. They had all finished, and I was last. Notably, when I introduced my character, I didn’t bother saying their pronouns. One of the other players asked, and I just deadpanned “Changeling…”

The collective lightbulb moment was like that one scene in 22 Jump Street. All three of them took a beat, then immediately crashed out when they realized the straight cis dude was the one playing a changeling, and that they hadn’t thought of it first.

Oh boy, playing RIFTS as my first go as a GM (aka DM) was how I learned to play by the rule of cool and come up with challenges/stories that weren’t directly dependent on character power levels. So much fun to be had with a mix of MDC and SDC characters, dimension hopping, and I also loved reading the expansion books for the over the top flavor text and inspiration.

Tried out other games to reduce complexity but still kept at least one of the expansion books for inspiration.

Why would he need to explain that?

Because the running gag is that everyone who plays DnD is either sad, traumatized, queer or some combination of all three.

I play dnd to set up a good torturous moral hypothesis to observe how my players react

And testing out fun game concepts on a free audience for my game dev while getting paid in snacks and grass

Love warehouse 13! Like eureka, it’s kinda silly, but good heartwarming fun. Definitely good inspiration for dnd campaigns. I’ve always wanted to rip it off but set in planescape. Sending players to different planes to pick up weird artifacts without blowing their covers.

This comment just reminded me of something. I actually have heard of Warehouse 13 before. A friend tried to get me to watch it many years ago when I was rewatching Eureka at the time. And I refused. He pitched Warehouse 13 as a magic item of the week type show in such a way that he completely removed any sense of personality from the show. Like, I don’t know a single thing about the show other than the fact that it’s a warehouse and there are items in it. He didn’t tell me a single thing about any of the characters, meanwhile in Eureka, the only thing I care about are the characters. Especially Sheriff Jack Carter, who is my husband. One of many.

Yeah, you’ll have fun with W13. Definitely a found family vibe, with good characters and chemistry. I’ve found a lot of rewatch value, a comfort show, in a similar vein to Eureka.
