I just had Japanese big brain title click in my head because I was too young in my journey the first time to get it lmao

So I was watching the first episode of Girlfriend, Girlfriend (it’s been out a while now I think, I only remember watching a few episodes the first time around) as a Japanese practice show since the language is relatively simple and it’s not going to be hard to understand the plot. but as I was watching, the meaning clicked in my head. “Girlfriend, Girlfriend” is the official English translation of the title. As a title I like it, it’s unique enough and has an interesting rhythm to say. But as a trabslation it misled me haha

the Japanese title is Kanojo mo Kanojo. But the romanization even hinders this a bit. the Japanese full title is カノショも彼女. and looking at that makes it much clearer. Kanojo is the third person pronoun for “she” but is also often used to mean “girlfriend”, kind of like what I imagine in English is like someone saying “my girl” or something. so the romanization should really be more like “Kanojo mo Kanojo”

So the first Kanojo is not in kanji because it’s EMPHASIZED. It’s emphasizing that it’s using two different meanings of the same word. and the mo is important because it means “also” in this context. in other words it’s more like “SHE is ALSO my girlfriend” which is exactly what the show is about
