@CactuarJoe I’ve been thinking about whether I want to do that. Though I do want to take them out in the off-season, not leave them in year-round.

@trixter Mm, installing the support involves drilling actual holes in your windowsill so yeah, if you wanna take them out in the winter it's probably more work than it's worth.
I went for the support because this thing sticks out of my window a *solid foot* and I do not wanna wake up one morning to the sounds of an AC unit flying precisely one story downwards

@CactuarJoe @trixter Old-timey installers sometimes opened up the _walls_ for permanent install. Then they'd frame it up nicely to fit and you'd just have a window-style AC in the middle of the wall somewhere, sticking out on the outside.
I'm sure it worked great until you needed to replace it

@CactuarJoe @trixter No, those are completely different. I've been in Japan. Like, kinda lived there part of a summer - I didn't think of it as "living there" but other people did. I'm very familiar with these.
But that's not what I'm talking about.
I literally mean sticking window AC units into the wall. Like making a new custom-sized window with no glass just for a specific AC unit that was meant for a window. Cord coming down the wall and everything.
I have seen this, it is a terrible idea. And yet people did it. It's hilarious! And weirdly loud. But real.

@CactuarJoe @moira I lived in a couple apartments in Columbus, OH that were built in the late 50s-early 60s that had those, and they were not ideal! One of them had it at the end of a hall that led to the bedroom and bathroom, but the door was too close for it to circulate into them, but also the hall was too long for it to effectively reach the living room. I’d just lie on the floor in the hall reading books or playing my GBA.
