@Tim_Eagon Isn't it a tenet of punk identity to be political?

The venn diagram overlap is extensive, but I don't think it's a true requirement (in the same way that guitars are an overwhelmingly dominant instrument of choice, but not required).

There are strands that are doing punk purely in the old Situationist vein, but not many... I do give side-eyes to people who utter the original statement, which reminds me; I laughed at a social event a few years ago when someone had the gall to say they didn't like that RATM had "become political" in their recent statements and I thought "dude, where were you in '92..."

@grayson @kimlockhartga People who don't realize RATM was political need to go to the doctor because they're clearly brain dead.

@octopuddle @grayson @kimlockhartga in high school circa 1993, I had some politically conservative friends who loved RATM. I was perplexed to say the least and said “there’s more to their lyrics than ‘Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me’.”

@Tim_Eagon @octopuddle @grayson people pick and choose what they want to hear, and ignore the rest, like the Bible.

@Tim_Eagon "Gets"? Wasn't being apolitical a source of derision for punk bands?

@audreygwinter @Tim_Eagon @octopuddle @grayson I will say that everyone ruined "Pumped up Kicks" for me by drawing my attention to the lyrics, so I understand to some extent, but really, a band's entire vibe? That should be obvious.

@Tim_Eagon @kimlockhartga @octopuddle @grayson I knew what it was about as soon as I heard it. Had to argue with a guy who claimd it "celebrated" youth violence, informing him that it was a *warning*. He didn't want to listen.
