I am so angry and disappointed at all the left- and center-wing commentators who bought into the right-wing framing of "parent's rights" as being more important than children's rights.

Like, I'm sorry, but parents have *responsibilities to* kids, not *rights over* kids. Kids aren't property, they're living, breathing *people* who deserve care and love and privacy and dignity.
οΈ @xgranade Two strong posts in one morning! Hope this movement gains strength.

If politicians gave a shit about children, the schools would feature: - HVAC systems that cleaned viruses out of the air - at least two child psychologists on staff - age-appropriate lessons to help children identify abuse - funding for well-paid staff in numbers sufficient for a buddy system to reduce the chances of abuse - arts education and after-school clubs to provide third spaces for kids - massive, safe playgrounds - protected biking and walking infrastructure from the school to residential neighborhoods Instead we get βparentsβ rightsβ, funding cuts, book bans, and car-centric infrastructure that kills pedestrians and bikers. If social media is bad for kids, THEY NEED ALTERNATIVES.

@poemproducer The immediate antecedent was reading about yet more age verification laws, but the point is more general, and yeah, includes parents trying to exert ownership over kids' genders.

@xgranade "Parents' rights" are exactly like "states' rights" in that the first question you should be asking in response to them being invoked is "A parent's right to what motherfucker?"

(As an aside, I'm calling it "age verification" to reference media coverage, but even that is a pernicious disnomer. It's a requirement that identity be registered with a centralized agency, and that that centralized agency is a trusted attestor as to age. To wit, note how the iOS update to follow UK age verification laws mandates that users register their identities with US companies like credit card providers.)
Addendum: this is a good toot.

And they will be the subject of data breaches. It's just a matter of time.

@Kierkegaanks Read the post again. My complaint is about how left- and center-wing commentators reinforced the general framing of parents' rights.

@xgranade and their political affiliation is not relevant so the focus is wrong. We had that discourse 45 years ago and it was the same culture of objectification and ownership here. Since then our culture changed 180Β° but reactionaries are waiting to change it back

@Kierkegaanks For someone whose bio says "no reply guys," you sure are being a reply guy.
If you want to disagree with my point, then do so, but don't tell me how to make my point better. Say your own thing, don't condescend to me.

@xgranade For a philosophy of control, however, they are the perfect targets. And they can't speak for themselves cos no one ever allows them to. But if they treat their own kids like this no wonder the foreign kids are made to dig things out of the ground with their bare hands to service the West.

@Black_Flag Yep. There's also things like that kids haven't finished developing, almost by definition, and do some absolutely terribly ill-advised shit as a result. Making some choices on behalf of kids is part of respecting them and keeping them safe, so it's easy for authoritarians to slip truly heinous shit into that cultural space without setting off alarm bells.
Being critical and approaching things in terms of how to respect kids' rights first and foremost is the key, I think.

@Black_Flag Like, if you approach issues in terms of that kids are independent people with independent rights whom parents and the rest of society have a responsibility to, then it's much easier to navigate things without authoritarianism.
But too many parents *want* to be authoritarian, and as you point out, there's very little room for kids to fight back as compared with other marginalized groups.

@xgranade Kids are in these times literally people who have no rights... even whilst it is claimed they do have them. But if you can't fight for a right yourself, in your own way and according to your own desire but must have someone do it for you then that is just empty words. The truth is kids are examples of what the authoritarians would prefer us all to be: powerless and obedient or else.

@xgranade I've been calling it age discrimination, because that is its literal description.
