    “I firmly believe the (economic) AI apocalypse is coming. These companies are not profitable. They can't be profitable. They keep the lights on by soaking up hundreds of billions of dollars in other people's money and then lighting it on fire.”

      @leemeade @pluralistic

      The fossil fuel industry is funding AI.
      https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-11-06/saudis-plan-100-billion-ai-powerhouse-to-rival-uae-s-tech-hub

      The Saudis alone are spending $100 billion on it.

      The oil industry is preparing to carry the AI bubble for as long as it takes, because the goal isn't just AI-enabled enshittification.
      https://www.wired.com/story/trump-energy-industry-ai-fossil-fuels-pittsburgh-summit/

      The goal is to keep burning fossil fuel.

      The fossil fuel industry is indifferent whether AI ever generates revenue, the goal is double digit rate increases for everyone ...

        Luckily or unluckily, depending on your perspective, AI will soon reach levels exceeding the funds available regardless of the desire to feed it.

        OpenAI Needs A Trillion Dollars In The Next Four Years

        Shortly before publishing this newsletter, I spoke with Gil Luria, Managing Director and Analyst at D.A. Davidson, and asked him whether the capital was there to build the 17 Gigawatts of capacity that OpenAI has promised. He said the following: No of course there isn't enough capital for all

          @katrinakatrinka @leemeade @pluralistic

          As #pluralistic has suggested, cutting off AI as early as possible will mitigate the economic pain that its inevitable crash will entail

          That can be hastened even further by stopping the source of its funding

          A fast switch to solar, wind, etc starves AI of its fossil fuel investment dollars (Might also save democracy & the planet too)

          Koch Network has Trump raising tariffs on Chinese solar panels by 3500%. Get into the solar panel (smuggling) biz.

            Okay, I just have to say that "getting into the solar panel snuggling biz" has to be the most #solarpunk thing ever.

              @juergen_hubert Did you misread the quote, make a typo or write "snuggling" on purpose? No matter what, the resulting sentence is amazing 😎

                @compfu

                It was a typo, but I'd feel bad for correcting it now. 😉
