During the Maroon war with the British, Nanny pondered surrendering because the Maroons were close to starving. In a dream, a voice told her to wait one more day. When she awoke the next morning, she found three pumpkin seeds in her apron pocket. Following the advice of the voice in her dream, she planted them on the side of a mountain that’s now known as Pumpkin Hill in Portland, Jamaica.
