Hello!

I'm Cassian, I'm nonbinary (they/them) and I live in Wales. I mostly post about TV I'm watching, surveys I'm interested in, being neurodivergent, environment stuff, things I'm making, and spontaneous grumpy rants of little consequence.

I do the @gendercensus annually.

I first tried the Fediverse over 10 years ago, but didn't really get ensconced until the first wave of Mastodon in 2016.

My top tip for getting into Mastodon is:

1) Make a post that says "hi, I'm interested in..." followed by like 10 hashtags about your interests.

2) Click and follow all the hashtags in your post.

3) People will boost your post and it'll go further because of the hashtags, due to the nature of the fediverse. Follow all the people who boost you; you can unfollow later if it's too many people.

I am always glad to see a Fediverse influx! I am often surprised that other networks are more popular - of all the places I post, I get the most boosts and replies here. You don't necessarily go viral, but people are genuinely actively engaged and curious and supportive of what you're doing. (Tumblr is in second place!)

Obviously every social network has its issues, I'm not saying Mastodon/the Fediverse is perfect, but in terms of reaching lots of interesting and interested and real people it's unrivalled.

Great graph. Really helps explaining what people can expect being without algorithm.

Second. To your recommendations I add:
- Free yourself from the pressure of having to have lots of followers or that your worth depends on the reactions of others. Life has more to offer than that!
- Take your time! Find a few people who suit you.
