    Also.. we pay 3 times the rate for energy here as in our previous home so we gotta pay close attention to everything

    The reason for this was because they bought in energy in corona time so it was very expensive.. Hopefully that'll go down also

    0.75 EUR/kwh 😩

    I've got a sneaky suspicion that you're being ripped off.
    Here in .BE every energy contract can be cancelled (if you find a cheaper one for instance) without costs after 1 month.
    Also if you initially signed up for 3 years or so.
    I suspect they're buying cheap, tell you they're stuck on a long term (high price) contract and stuff +50% in their own pockets.
    Which is not legal in .BE either: if you're selling energy to someone else with a profit, you need to be a registered energy company

        @Viss Huh! Interesting!

        Maybe there is a restaurant close but otherwise we're pretty much in the middle of nowhere

            Not sure if there's a difference between .BE and .NL (since EU etc) but they've probably got some kind of loophole.
            Like "Sure, you can get your own grid feed at non-ripoff prices. But you have to pass through our property and we charge €5K per meter to dig in your cable" - or something like that.

            Or "OK, maybe it's not 100% legal what we do. You're free to leave if you don't like it. Otherwise pay up and stfu."

            Still, sucks.

              Not sure if Belgium is within the limits you're willing to move?
              I'm building a house so my apartment will become vacant (but no idea when yet).
              New windows, plenty of space, easy to keep warm, your own electricity counter (pick any contract you like) and internet via VDSL2, coax and/or fiber 🙂

                  @stux they made the contract for electricity during covid times when electricity was more expensive (was it actually?) I don't know about the Netherlands but you can always change your electricity contract, and normally the renter chooses the contract themselves.

                    I don't get it. Did you recently get an energy contract? During Covid, and even in 2022 at the start of the large scale invasion of Ukraine I don't think I've seen 75ct/kWh prices, here in NL.
