    I think it's been 17 years ago since I last bought a #DigitalCamera that _wasn't_ integrated into a smart phone, so I am a bit behind on what the state of the art is in this field. But maybe 2026 I will get a new one.

    What I am primarily for is something with a good optical zoom - one that is significantly better than the 5x optical zoom of my Pixel 8 Pro - yet small enough to carry around in the pocket of a jacket.

    I am also curious how file transfer is done these days. Is it still done via USB cables, or is cloud integration via WLAN standard these days (I'd prefer #NextCloud integration, but I'd be willing to settle for others)?

      @juergen_hubert I usually use SD card transfer with my cameras (2018 compact and 2019 DSLR), i think that is still standard. Get a recent card reader and high-speed SD cards if you don't have already. File sizes with RAW (which even many of the better compacts support these days) add up quickly.

      My DSLR can send files to a smart device via Wifi but it is slow and eats through battery fast.

        @juergen_hubert if good optical zoom is important to you, look into "travel zoom" cameras specifically

          @ratsnakegames

          It is. My Pixel is excellent at short distance, but it's with long-distance zoom that it runs into limitations.
