    I bought this book as a result of an Internet Argument where one of the posters claimed that the medieval European guilds were in their own way just as horrible as the large multinational companies of the present #LateStageCapitalism (though on a smaller scale) - and they cited this book as a reference.

    If nothing else, this book should give me some useful context for my own #folklore research.

      @juergen_hubert@bookrastinating.com @juergen_hubert@mementomori.social and here I thought guilds were also the forerunner of trade unions, their power coming from their members more than from the financiers.

        @fnordius @juergen_hubert@bookrastinating.com

        Not precisely. Guild members were all self-employed or in the employment of guild members instead of for companies owned by others. Furthermore, guilds enforced how many people could work in their relevant trade in a particular town.
