I just sent this to RTÉ, the Irish Times, the Irish Independent, Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin and Labour

May I respectfully suggest that other people do something similar to your own news organisations and political parties? Use your own words, if you can.

This is what I sent:

Subject: "Your continued presence on X"

Text:

Dear Sir or Madam,

As you will doubtlessly be aware, "X" is once again in the news for all the wrong reasons, but the latest scandal about this platform and its continued use of its AI bot "Grok", to allow people to digitally undress and create pornographic content of people, including children, without their consent must certainly be the straw that breaks the camel's back?

When confronted about the problem the platform did nothing to address the problem. In fact they made it worse by making this despicable ability effectively "pay per view".

This is disgusting.

I therefore must alert you to the fact that you are still offering the option to people to follow your account on that platform. By doing so you are feeding into its business model, and that does nothing to add real pressure on them to stop offering users the option to do these things.

It would be beyond cowardly to hide behind legislation on this matter, waiting for the government or the EU to legislate against it or to ban the platform outright. The real pressure will come from major content providers such as yourself pulling out. And in light of these recent developments there can be no moral justification for you remaining a presence there.

While I am on the subject, I would like to ask you to look beyond the main players in social media. Why not add a presence on a Mastodon instance, for example? Mastodon would be an ethical alternative to X, and even if you cannot bring yourself to close your account on X, with you presenting options to follow you on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube, surely it would not be a big deal to add one more "icon" to that list?

Geachte lezer,

Zoals jullie weten staat X alwéér in het nieuws. Deze keer vanwege het aanbieden van de mogelijkheid om met hun AI app Grok mensen, inclusief kinderen, zonder toestemming te ontkleden en in pornografische houdingen te zetten.

Wanneer vinden jullie dat deze organisatie een grens overschrijdt die écht niet kan worden getolereerd? Ik zou zeggen dat kinderpornografie zó ver voorbij zo een grens ligt dat een discussie hierover niet langer noodzakelijk is, toch?

En wanneer X hierover wordt aangesproken dan is hun enige reactie om deze functionaliteit achter een "pay wall" te plaatsen. Dus kinderpornografie of het sexualiseren van mensen zonder hun toestemming is ok zolang ervoor wordt betaald? Dat meen je toch niet?

En daarom moet ik jullie nu vragen: waarom presenteren jullie mensen nu nog steeds met de optie om jullie op "X" te volgen? Daarmee blijven jullie dit gedrag legitimeren.

En het zou ontzettend laf zijn als jullie antwoord hierop zou zijn om niets te doen tot de regering of de EU eindelijk de knoop doorhakt en er wat aan doet door wetgeving of via het verbieden van X. Geef het goede voorbeeld en neem zelf het initiatief.

Als nieuwsorganisaties en politieke partijen via X blijven communiceren dan blijft dit gedrag voor hen rendabel. Daar moet iets aan worden gedaan. Grote accounts zoals die van jullie zorgen ervoor dat de kleine volgers denken dat X de plaats blijft om de vinger op de pols te houden. Als kleine accounts afhaken dan zal Elon Musk er geen nachtrust aan verliezen. Maar als de grotere organisaties dat beginnen te doen, dán verandert er misschien wat. En als dat niet gebeurt dan gaat X maar ten gronde. Dat verdient dat platform dan.

En wat is dan het alternatief?

Al jaren timmert Mastodon aan de weg. En Mastodon is gefedereerd. Dat betekent dat het niet het eigendom is van een enkele oligarch of miljardair. En tegenwoordig zijn er miljoenen Mastodon accounts en duizenden instanties. Mastodon "is here to stay".

Het zou heel verdrietig zijn als jullie je er niet toe kunnen brengen om X te verlaten. Hoe ver moet het komen voordat jullie dat doen? Maar zelfs al blijven jullie op X, maak dan op zijn minst een Mastodon account aan en voeg dat toe aan de opties om jullie te volgen. Dat is het minste wat jullie kunnen doen.
