modern computers are such a fucking scam. oh, you spent $2k on hardware? yeah ok well now you get to spend hundreds/mo for access to software that you can run on your computer. remember when you could just buy a copy of microsoft office 2010 and then you just had it. no paying monthly just to have office. it feels like my computer is just leased to me by software companies

do i actually own my computer? because without the software there's not much i can actually do. i mean, i run linux and i generally try to avoid subscription based software. this client pays for my access to adobe products, office etc. (my school also pays for that under a different account but i prefer to just do https://github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts so that policies aren't applied)

like i genuinely do not understand. could you imagine if i went back to 2000 and started shilling a pencil to people that you had to pay monthly in order to use? nobody would fucking buy that shit yet it's acceptable for word processors?

YES ok. i have libreoffice installed but shit man. my professors want shit done in Access for certain courses, Excel has a way better implementation (tables for instance, super nice to have for organizational purposes and making queries for visualization and a bunch of dynamic shit). calc is mid. my professors have actually told me straight up "cannot open odf". I know they could, word allows you to do so but they pretended like it wasn't a real file format and refused to accept my submissions

@puppygirlhornypost2@transfem.social I got through most of college using some combination of python, PDF, school computers, google docs (bleh) and just turning in print copies when things got real stubborn, but I 100% get the pain. I'll admit I had at least a couple of tense talks with instructors that boiled down "So you're just cool with trying to force me to spend hundreds of dollars because Grandpa doesn't want to learn how to install a PDF reader and decided it was powertrip time?" Constant, stupid struggle with lazy assholes who seemingly did not understand the computers they supposedly taught.
