“Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer”. Carney has a long and distinguished career in finance and politics. He is in complete control with whom he meets. Carney is buying time and setting up alternate trade outside of USSA. This takes time.

He’s in complete control of who he meets, but the way the article headline is framing it is irresponsible IMO.

As you said, Carney is setting up alternative trade partners. I’d assume part of his diversification strategy is to identify what aspects of trade specifically we need to divert away from the US due to Trump.

When asked during the campaign if Project 2025 was his agenda, Trump said he had never heard of it. This was widely reported, so I’m not sure why you’re confused about what I wrote

“The best thing you can do is capitulate, it’ll totally work against the bully President this time”

There, that’s what his speech will be.

The next person that says “strategic voting” within earshot is getting knocked out, I swear to god. This is so beyond the pale

            Strategic voting.

Whatever alternative you’re thinking of is unworkable. Nor am I convinced any other party would do something different, given our vulnerable position, except to maybe genuinely entertain further integration.

And hopefully they nod and smile, and he goes back and reports they’ve contained us so we can buy some more time.

Everyone’s getting their pitchforks out, but I’d be doing the exact same thing as PM right now.

If Carney fucks us, I’m going to be rightly fucking pissed.

If this is a meeting for discovery, OK. If this is a meeting to engage them more, fuck off.

This closed door meeting better have some public relay once it’s over a good solid cabinet member can leak the details.

This does not sit well with me.

Yeah the guy who ran on opposing Trump and supporting workers who immediately folded to Trump and ratfucked the flight attendants definitely deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Folding would be a move towards actually becoming the 51st state. He’s given a few token concessions.

Probably just to buy time. I’d be doing the same in his shoes, anyway.

Of course you don’t take anything they say at face value, but keeping track of what they emphasise, what they downplay, and how that changes over time can give you some notion of where their weak points are. Don’t listen to what they’re saying, listen to what they’re trying to hide.

In the end, though, what we want is to keep the Americans talking, rather than shooting at us. Each diplomatic conversation buys time until they either course-correct or collapse into civil war. And if that requires some MPs to sit through a dramatic reading of Trump partisan trash while not visibly rolling their eyes, well, they’re being paid well enough for it. There’s a big difference between keeping someone talking and letting yourself be persuaded by them. (People like Danielle Smith don’t need to be persuaded over to the evil side—they were on that side from the get-go.)

there’s two things that EVERYONE should be able to recognize about Trump, but really just boils down to one simple fact : he always says the opposite of what is true.

                          • when he says “nobody knows more about this than me,” what he REALLY means is “i am completely clueless about this subject”

                          • when he says “never heard of it,” he is VERY involved.

If it keeps them from doing anything worse for a little while, I fully appreciate Carney sitting through a speech by another blowhard.

Honestly, I think I might characterise Goebbels, propaganda minister, as a blowhard as well.

How much we don’t like a particular blowhard is kind of irrelevant here.
