1/ The Harz Mountains are not particularly high by German standards, but they rise prominently from the northern plains and mark the transition to the German Middle Mountains. And they are prominent in German folklore too, thanks to their rich body of miners' legends and the infamous Brocken Mountain - home of the biggest witches' gathering in all of Germany.

And the best folk tale collection of this region is "Harzsagen" by Heinrich Pröhle.

2/ I've visited the Harzs several times in recent years, and Pröhle's work was a faithful companion on these visits. Here are a few of the tales I have translated from the region - covering dwarves, ghosts, Pokémon, witches, ambulatory wall clocks, evil stags, cannibal bandits, and more!
