Went to San Diego’s pan-Asian neighbourhood, browsed a local music shop—this is what I found weird:

    It only had K-pop.

There was no J-pop, nor V-pop, nor Cantopop.

What’s more, none of the people who worked there were Korean. They were Chinese, Vietnamese, etc. They all loved the pop music of their respective cultures.

And yet, the only thing they were allowed to sell—in this pan-Asian neighbourhood—was K-pop.

So I asked why that was. And apparently, their shop is some kind of pilot project to assess the feasibility of “Asian music”—and they’re convinced Americans only have an appetite for K-pop.
