1/ An important work that I have come to appreciate is the two-volume "Aberglaube und Sagen aus dem Herzogthum #Oldenburg" by Ludwig Strackerjan, since it covers the region where I live. It is one thing to read about folk tales in books, but another one to visit the places where they allegedly occur - where the Devil created a lake and a forested hill, where night hag plagued sleepers, where treasures are buried, and so forth.

His accounts of "walriders" were especially fascinating - "night hag"-type spirits who come from England in order to "ride" German men and women at night.
