    @jannem ah! so after you proposed you both got the rings? 😮

    I have a feeling it's more about the engagement then the rings but after seeing movies and such i wasn't sure it was "possible without" if you know what i mean haha

    @stux
    Not quite.

    We decided to get married. We then saw a ring she liked a lot, so I bought it for her as her engagement ring. We got married.

    She only has the engagement ring (it's a memento, really; she never wears it). I have no rings at all.

        My gf and me have decided to go shop for engagement rings together at some point when we have spare money for it

        But ofc she does still wait for a proposal but is that even possible without a ring directly or maybe a placeholder or something

        I feel so clueless in this all lol

            I proposed and later we went shopping for the wedding rings. if you like a placeholder maybe you can look for something thats cheap but cool, something she likes e. g. geek stuff or 3d-print something.

                @stux …if you are going to propose…then propose. It’s either a yes or no. Get a simple gold ring and tell her that it is because you don’t want to wait forever. Tell her that she can have whatever you can manage but realistically there isn’t a ring good enough for what she means to you…even if the diamond was the size of a baseball. You’ll find it’s not the ring, but what the ring means is more important. Going on 13yrs of marriage…

                  @ministerofimpediments Well, it's more from her side

                  Just over a year ago she caught the flowers on the wedding of her mom! So i had a year to ask but im a little overdue

                  I think it's more about the fact it's asked and not so much the ring

                  But im a little unsure on how to go about this without it direcrly

                    @stux You're options are wide open. Heck - unless there's some financial/legal benefit to being married, don't even feel pressured to do so.

                    I've been with the same woman now for 19 years. Many people think we're married. We're not. Her daughter is only 7 years younger than me... but still tells folks I'm her step-dad.

                    For us, the only reason to get married would be to potentially make end-of-life stuff a tad simpler, as right now I don't have any actual claim to the house. (cont'd)

                      @stux you don’t need a placeholder just ask her, or her ask you, and then both agree. We did that over 30 years ago.

                        @stux I proposed without a ring. It was actually a spontaneous kind of moment (given my anxiety problems I was nervous as hell and when the impulse hit I decided screw all the fancy stuff, just do it before I chicken out again). We ended up getting a pair of ear rings my mom gave me that came from my great grandmother, took the small diamonds from them, and had one put in to an engagement ring and one out in to my eventual wedding band.
