    "Sunken Castles, Evil Poodles is an ongoing project for translating old German folklore tales into English. All translations are released under a Creative Commons Zero license" What a delightful project! https://sunkencastles.com

    I'm amused by how very different "kobolds" are in German folklore compared to their modern fantasy interpretation

      @evrys

      Yeah, there was a specific 19th century American scholar who wrote about German folklore and spread the notion that kobolds were "mining spirits" in the Anglosphere, and it spread from there. But in actual German folklore, "kobold" was a fairly generic term for "small, mischievous spirit" - similar to the British "goblin".

        @juergen_hubert One of many oddities to come from 19th century scholars, no doubt... at least the dwarves still seem to be cave-dwellers possessed of riches!

          Yeah, although they range from "friendly" to "thieves" to "utter assholes".

          They are also more magical than in modern portrayals, including their ability to turn invisible with "cloaking caps".
