I think maybe it used to assume gender. Lately I've been hearing young women address each other as "bro."

This is terrible.I think it's your system's default font, or at least a default style sheet. Are you doing this on a Linux system? I'm using Windows and it's a different font.
The Vivaldi devs are on Mastodon. Maybe tag them and they might be able to help?
