I was lucky in my old neighborhood. It was all of the neighbors who put them up while I did nothing but flick beetles into soapy water. In a few years my yard was good while the neighbors kept putting up Japanese beetle traps.

Ooh. Be careful. I avoided using the bags when I read that as you're trapping and killing many of the beetles, you've just attracted all of them to your yard. They still have a chance to mate and lay eggs in your yard before succumbing to the delights of the bag. Even more beetles will be there next year.
