  • The market is down today because Michael Burry revealed he’s shorting Palantir and Nvidia.'n'nSure—he was right about the 2008 housing bubble.

One should always be careful about speculative investors, because the market doesn't like to play nice. A big win can fuel a dozen minor losses, and timing is everything.

Plus, ultracrepidarianism hits hard, and knowledge about one aspect of the system does not specifically imply perfect knowledge of all aspects.

With that said, I do think this bubble is going to pop and pop hard. I just think that trying to nail down the exact timing is a mug's game: it could be tomorrow, or they could somehow keep it going for another year with federal bailouts, or any number of other means to keep looping the money around and milking the whales.

There is a not insignificant segment of the New Atheists who have to believe that there are no such thing as qualia, because otherwise a great many of their assertions would collapse.

From there it's not exactly a long drive to get to the notion that one person's lived experience must be intrinsically comprehensible to another, and from there it's a skip and a jump to some of the very worst examples of human behaviour, starting with victim-blaming and jumping all the way to straight-laced eugenics.

And all in service to a god named objectivity.

  • Someone just told me the Velvet Underground aren’t as impactful as the Beatles because neither he nor his friends have ever heard of them.

Appropriately enough, this is like saying that because you've never heard of Andy Warhol, he must not have been as much of an inspiration as Pablo Picasso.

Seriously, never heard of the Velvet Underground? Next they'll say they've never heard of James Brown, and at that point I know for a damn fact that their musical tastes are as deep as a wading pool.

But considering I once pulled the "Who's On Stage" skit on a group of coworkers, they're not alone...

Oh, okay! I must have missed it, because it's kind of tucked away.

Well, I had 400 points in the eShop. Might as well get this while the getting's good.

That all sounds unpleasant. Ripping out the soul of a game just to create a 'revised' edition? Well, I have a 3DS sitting right here instead. And I certainly do have Bejeweled 3 on my Deck, which runs like it was born to play on it. (As well it should. I'm surprised it even takes up 320 MB.)

The original Puzzle Quest, meanwhile? Delisted. And the Switch version, Legend Returns, is going to be delisted after tonight.

  • Interestingly, some Japanese developers don’t like the term “JRPG.” They see it as othering — a label that ghettoized their games from “mainline” WRPGs.

Quite a few folks do try to cover up the shoulders of giants with dropcloth and pretend they're not there.

Mostly I just smile and note that anyone claiming to be an artistic purist in any way is full of it. (And I'm no longer that annoying kid who thought that certain forms of artistic expression were intrinsically invalid.)

I find it deeply amusing that some of the niche RPGs, such as Etrian Odyssey, and quite a few bigger names, such as Shin Megami Tensei, drew a boatload of inspiration from the Wizardry series, released in the US starting in 1981. Even Final freaking Fantasy drew massive inspiration from Wizardry, though of course there were plenty of other sources.
