@NullNowhere my point is exactly the latter one: while there's nothing inherent about joules that makes them intuitively graspable, the jump from "J" to "something well known" is shorter, especially in a global context

"a single braking event of a small car can dissipate over 0.12 kWh worth of energy"even if your goal is to make things comprehensible in comparison to mundane events, you could use "can bring to a boil X ml [or cups if you wish] of water"!
water's heat capacity is 4200 J/kg/K, it's a very convenient number even if you are doing mental math

"a single braking event of a small car can dissipate over 0.12 kWh worth of energy""that amount of energy is sufficient to charge 10 completely drained iPhone batteries"
this is literally the electrical engineering equivalent of measuring things in football fields. what is it about americans and using real units

i am begging people to use joules

You know that whole "techno-optimism" thing that was going around a year or so ago?@xgranade i think you can probably put a data center in space (fsvo "space"). it's stupid but cosmic rays aren't gonna stop you
people have been launching COTS, non-hardened, literally from nearest radioshack, electronics to space for decades now and it is mostly just... fine? you might have to reboot it sometimes. but i think it is counterfactual to imagine that if you put a blade server in space cosmic rays will prevent it from doing the serving
