The first Final Fantasy I ever played was Final Fantasy VII. I played it at a friend’s place on PlayStation and was immediately hooked by how it looked.

The first version I actually owned was the PC release. It was not made by SquareSoft but by Eidos. Oddly, this has become the canonical version of FFVII. SquareSoft lost the original PlayStation source code, so all later releases are based on the PC build.

I only owned the PlayStation version later. I bought it at a flea market for $25.

As far as PlayStation ownership goes, I had Final Fantasy VIII first. I never got into it. I remember being frustrated by how different it felt from VII. I probably should try it again. I still own the discs.

The next Final Fantasy I owned was Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles – The Crystal Bearers on Wii. Most people dislike this one. I had fun with it and still think it is better than many mainline entries. It is a Wii exclusive and has never been ported.

After that, I played the original Final Fantasy. First on an Amazon Fire, then on NES. It is extremely basic. It feels closer to early Ultima than to later Final Fantasy.

I am currently playing Final Fantasy III 3D Remake on Steam Deck. It feels like an awkward stepchild between Final Fantasy I and VII. There is a lot of grinding, and the dual leveling of stats and jobs is strange.

Other Final Fantasy games I own include IV, VIII, and IX on PC, and X on PlayStation 2. I still have not played them.

IX is absolutely stellar. I was also really disappointed by the severe differences between VII and VIII, as someone who also started the series with VII, but IX pulls things back in the direction of VII. It’s still very different, in the same way that all FF games after… IV, I think?.. have been quite different, but it feels more true to earlier games, and to VII in particular. I cannot recommend it enough.
