    Others have already mentioned modern word processing software and self-publishing options, so I'll say something different: The sheer amount of old public domain works which have been scanned and made available as digital downloads for everyone to read. I wouldn't even have _conceived_ of my own writing project if I hadn't stumbled across this links list of German folk tale collections in the public domain at Wikisource. It's truly staggering what has been made available for us, if we only care to look.

    So, if you have some time to spend, browse through the catalogues of one of these digital archives and see if anything catches your interest. I promise, it will be worth it!
