    @cstross

    What are they going to blame after leaving the ECHR? Are they going to scapegoat a minority and say that Brexit now requires "removing" that minority?

    The ECHR is the only thing giving people in the UK any human rights. If the UK leaves it, then there would no longer be any human rights in Britain. All there would be are assorted laws that parliament would be totally free to revoke and replace with whatever they want, including 1930s-style stuff.

    The lack of a written constitution or powerful second chamber in the UK combined with fascists leading the polls is putting Britain in an incredibly dangerous situation.

    @cstross @FediThing but instead they’d have British rights, at the sufferance of whatever British Bill of Rights parliament saw fit to pass. Which would be inherently superior to the current arrangement because it has British in the name, obviously

      Today's headlines in the Daily Express!

      The "Give Us a Proper Brexit" crusade calls for leaving the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), slashing red tape for businesses and enforcing a 12-mile exclusion zone around the UK for British vessels only.

      Brexit is a utopian revolutionary project, and like all URPs it can never be achieved! Juche Britannia! Consign Earth to the Dustbin of History! The People Struggle for Brexit! &c.

      Revolutions are *hungry*.

      @cstross Was that only British flagged vessels within 12 miles? Because that would be rather problematic for things like international trade, ferries....

        I suspect the real real Brexiters won't be happy until the UK is a vassal state of the USA - although I suspect we would end up with the same status as Puerto Rico.

        @rogerb @angusm @cstross I remember that situation being part of a novel setup. Can’t remember the title, I think it was a late A.C. Clarke work. The UK governor used the title of ‘prime minister’ though.

          It won't be a "proper" Brexit until they kick out all those damn immigrant Normans. And maybe the Angles and Saxons too.

            30 years of public contempt and humiliation is nowhere *near* long enough. Why give them the ease of an early death?

                @petealexharris @Remittancegirl @angusm @cstross Quoting Sergio Caneva, writing in 1973, describing Italian Fascism in his book documenting the history of partisans in the Veneto (my translation).

                “Fascism was neither an idea nor a doctrine, it was just a big cloud of soot created to defend the interest of the land owners and industrialists ... with the abuse of the word ‘fatherland’.”

                History rhyming and all that.

                      @bruce @angusm @cstross well can we at least tie people we don’t like across cannons and fire them? Land of hope and gory.

                      Shooting human limbs out of cannons would do a lot of damage to enemy sails.

                      Just something to think about.
