Pondering a conversation with @Taskerland about special tat being an issue with Kickstarted games - bespoke dice-materials and the like. Specialist decks are for me a particular issue if they're fundamental to the game. I lost several of my Earthdawn cards and it seemed a basic design flaw.

We discussed everyone having a deck of ordinary cards, but even those are a point of failure because you need to check the deck is intact, in a way you don't need to check dice. Any other fails? #ttrpg

@Printdevil Earthdawn cards? I don't think I ever forgave White Wolf for their CCG magic system for the first edition of Changeling.

@Taskerland the box of Earthdawn had a lot of paraphernalia that you kind of needed long term, and was all a faff to take apart and store, but really added nothing to the game except box weight. It was just a basic fail point.

I think that a lot of about games which have stuff inherent to the system not a scenario. If you have a special deck for resolution that is a fail point waiting to happen, but I don't mind if it's a thing just for one scenario because that seems less mission critical.

@Taskerland I loved the threads to items and characters and the way that evolved, but the background seemed an uphill struggle, and for some reason kept jarring me with a bit of an EPT feel that upset my karma.

@Printdevil @Taskerland The idea that you need to be quite good at something creative you can show off (because the monsters are intrinsically not) seemed like a good one, but in my limited play it didn't seem to be anything more than another skill check.

I liked the evolution and depth in the items, that over time you bonded with things. It just seemed less disposable than D&Ds "I have binned my +2 sword because I've found a +2 Sword with the advantage that it makes tea"

Earthdawn had lots of faults but at least it was different. It was D20 that almost killed gaming for me.

@Printdevil That was a brilliant mechanic. I also loved that there was a degree of ambiguity as to whether they were ancient magical blades with deep histories or whether being wielded by heroes transformed the kinds of blades that heroes tend to have. @RogerBW

I liked that too, there was an element of The Third Policemen about that I adored. The whole bit about becoming your bicycle.

@Printdevil I was thinking my next Kickstarter should have a bag of novelty teeth as an add-on.

I once watched Steven Berkoff direct and one of his mutterings about his cast was "The little shit I'll send him home with his knuckles in a bag"

Which at the the time I didn't really associate with a Kickstart stretch goal.
