So is IRC gonna finally make it's big comeback with this Discord bullshit?

I love the way Mastodon has replaced Twitter for me, the decentralization and DIY of all of it. It works be such an improvement over Discord.
I'm not very techy though so idk what's up.

@humanadverb
Some of the issue is that on one hand, there are features IRC lacks (particularly by default) that many Discord users expect, and policies IRC networks tend to have that Discord built itself on *not* having (see Discord's bot-friendliness)... but on the other, many people used Discord for things it wasn't actually suited for (archival, distribution, etc.) in part because of those features, in part because of efforts to make wikis and the open Web undesirable and "unsafe"-feeing. -

I hope we figure it out.
If I were up explore finding an alternative with voice chatting, to replace discord, could you point me in a direction.

humanadverb The gaming communities in particular seem resistant to any all-in-one solution to their use cases (multi-channel chat, voice chat, screen streaming, and custom stickers/emojis). IRC isn’t going to cover any of those, really, let alone all of them.

@kichae I hear that. Look at the way people cobble together Roll20, discord, etc.
Can anything in IRC support the voice chat, at least?

humanadverb Oh, goodness, no. IRC is such an incredibly simple system, and it functionally hasn’t been extended since the 90s.
I think a lot of XMPP clients support voice chat, though.

@kichae Would you suggest I explore xmpp clients if I were trying to set up a way to stay voice linked during a remote ttrpg session?
I know some people just hop on Google Meet for voice/cams, but that is gross in its own way.
