What is the Fediverse answer to Play By Post role-playing games?
I've been in some on Discord, but expect to leave there soon.
Anyone have experience?
My first thought is just do it here with private mentions so it just shows to the other players and the GM. You've got text and pictures, no problem.
But there might be better options, anyone know?
Thanks.

@cptbutton Do you want something asynchronous like a true play-by-post, or would a VTT like Roll20 or Foundry work for you? If the former, you could go REALLY old school and do play-by-mail.

The former.

@cptbutton Play by forum on rpggeek.com (not a fedi app but very pleasant)

@cptbutton
I do play on a public forum (rpgcrossing.com) with threads for IC an OOC but also on a private forum where we take the OOC to discord (but could use any messaging method, obviously) -

@cptbutton If it has to be on Mastodon, private mentions are probably the way to go. I think it'll be somewhat awkward to collect and document, especially since everybody can edit and delete their posts.
There were plenty of old-style forums catering for for this sort of thing, some of them offering private threads an such when I last looked, which admittedly was quite a while ago.
I assume finding the right kind of people who are into the same sort of themes and - more importantly - posting frequency is the crux and Mastodon can certainly help there. dice.camp is still going.
My advice would be gather your party on Mastodon, then play on a forum (or self-host something or play over file-shared docs or whatever).
I see you are an old-school nerd. groups.io is an old-school mailing list, which is way better for this sort of thing than the play-by-mail others have mentioned. I was really glad to have found this when yahoo groups died. You might like it too. It does decent collation of topics.
Groups.io | Email Discussion Groups & Listserv Alternative
Groups.io is a modern email group service and listserv alternative with no ads. Create mailing lists with calendars, files, wikis, and more. Better than Google Groups or Yahoo Groups.
(groups.io)
(Just noticed they hid their free groups feature a bit. You need to click on "Just need a limited free plan?" on their pricing page.)
