    88 years ago today, The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien was published. I still have my first copy that my parents gifted me at age 10. It was my gateway to modern fantasy and it was also the spark that ignited my interest in cartography and map making which eventually became, a few decades later, my profession.

        @wfgWorkshop

        The fold out maps in the back of the hard cover edition that my high school library had kept me fascinated the entire time I was there. Sadly, no one ever told me I could choose map making as a career. I would probably have been a lot happier if they had!

          @wfgWorkshop My not native English speaking mother was a fan and read The Hobbit to me 55 years ago. A great memory.

            @wfgWorkshop I loved The Hobbit. That and Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy were the first books I ever read.

              @pussreboots Very cool! An illustrated book from the TV movie, that’s excellent!

                  @HisVirusness That’s a pretty good start! Hitchhiker’s is one of the funniest books I ever read!
