I would like to finally quit YouTube, which will be significant for me in that I'll be severing my last tie to corporate tech.

I have a YT channel, but that's not what keeps me on YT. It's about the awesome, bite-sized, high-quality video essays that I enjoy so much. I just can't read books ALL the time, damnit! It serves the same need for me as magazines, but...VIDEO!
I want to explore PeerTube more for sure. Anyone else have suggestions? How about Nebula?
@alisynthesis
I like nebula, though I often forget it's there. It will depend on whether what they have matches what you're looking for. I like the idea that the folk on there get paid. And that I've contributed to that. -

@alisynthesis I'm in a similar boat. There is so much fantastic stuff on youtube, and I really like the fact that video creators have some path to getting paid by being on the platform; but MAN is that an abusive algorithm. And the constant pushing of shorts, it's terrible!
I have nebula, and I enjoy it!
I really hope more creators team up and go the nebula route; I wouldn't mind paying a few 40/yr subscriptions to like, all the high quality wood working channels, or maker channels, or...

@alisynthesis Oh, also patreon. I follow a few creators that I especially like, and they usually post videos early there; so that might be an alternative

@rgegriff cool to hear your thoughts on nebula! I totally agree that it would be amazing for an alternative platform for high-quality craftsperson/maker/diy/art channels would be incredible, and something I'm very open to paying for.

That said, I've lost track of so much YT content I used to watch because no googevil account. I might have to try the RSS thing folk have mentioned. -

I’ve subscribed to Nebula for a year, then let it lapse. There’s some good content on there, but so far they’ve kept it pretty limited/aren’t inviting the creators I’d like to see there. The quality is definitely better than YouTube for what is there.I’m guessing it is probably more effective to subscribe to the Patreon channels that are most interesting to you. But I haven’t used patreon yet.

@neverbeaten I was just castigating the dollar per month model elsewhere a couple of days ago. But maybe that really is the way to go.

@alisynthesis Aye. I hear ya. Quitting YouTube is *hard*.
My compromise for now is setting the VPN to Albania and just watch!

@alisynthesis I still watch YT more than I’d like, although as others have said, in the browser with ad blocking or RSS. The interesting thing is, when I try to think as I write this what i’d sorely miss, I can’t think of anything (except for Too Much Music of course, which you should host on peertube anyway

I usually search for music tips/lessons/gear reviews, food recipes and music vids, but now there’s #TIBtv

So I just basically want to stop, not replace it. Not helpful, sorry

@sknob i'd say that's super helpful!
️That's pretty much how I feel about it, too. I don't exactly want to replace it, and I definitely also want to cut way back on the amount of time I spend on trash videos.
I've got a lot of moving shit to peertube to do, I think. I'm pretty seriously considering MakerTube. Do you have any thoughts or feelings about PeerTube instances?

@alisynthesis that’s where I’ve moved my old videos and published my new one(s).

Holy shit people, my first Nebula video starts with a BANG! It's a video by some guy named Jacob Geller who may or may not be super famous (can't tell b/c there is NO VIEW COUNT!) talking about the first episode of The Twilight Zone.
You can watch one video without signing up: https://nebula.tv/videos/jacob-geller-the-future-is-an-empty-room
Seriously, if this is indicative of the Nebula experience, it's exactly what I was looking for.

@sknob oh, nice! It looks like there's so much good stuff on there. And if it's sknob-approved, it's probably a good place!

@alisynthesis I really like Nebula. I bought a lifetime subscription for $300 a while ago. I lke that there's _just enough_ content published every day that I can scan through what has been published since the last time I checked and add what's interesting to my Watch Later list.

@voiceofunreason that's cool! One of the things I love about Mastodon is that it's not endless.

If you don't know them already from youtube, check out Philosophy Tube and Angela Collier too. They are on Nebula. -
